Twinkies? Seriously?
Are the folks at Wise Choice Market out of their minds to promote Twinkies as health food?
Well, no. This post is not about that kind of Twinkies.
Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome……
Twinkie the mouse!
Yes, you’re reading correctly. We have a new pet mouse named Twinkie, and she’s the most adorable, funny, fluffy, cute mouse ever!
We got her at the pet store and the girls fell in love with her instantly and named her Twinkie, perhaps because she’s as fluffy as a Twinkie, or because she’s the same size or the same shape, or maybe they simply liked the sound of that name - I’m not quite sure. But “Twinkie” it is!
Twinkie is a baby. She has her own cage with a running wheel and a slide and a little balcony – everything a baby mouse could possibly wish for.
Many think mice are pests, but our little Twinkie is anything but. Look at her. Isn’t she a sweetheart?
The girls have been taking very good care of her. They clean her cage, change her water and feed her daily (a gourmet meal of bird seed and Cheddar cheese - by far her favorite combo)
Why am I telling you all this?
Because this little mouse is a manifestation of Nature itself – the untamed and untameable. I’m in awe of that. The more I look at her the more I realize that similarly to other house pets originating in the wild, she’s totally undomesticated, although she has been a pet since the moment she was born and has never been outside.
I love how she hides her food under her wood chips and builds nests out of hay to sleep in.
Just like her cousins in nature, she’s more of a night creature, with a natural instinct to hide. Quite clever for such a tiny, vulnerable creature. Nor is she very fond of being petted. I wonder whether the need to pet is actually a human concept rather than the animal’s need to be petted.
She’s also super clean. She grooms herself daily in a very similar fashion to a cat, licking her paws and her fur for minutes on end, till she’s pleased with the result.
What else can I tell you about her? Oh, yes. Mice tweet! A gentle, delicate, soft tweet. I have no idea what she’s trying to say, but she sure tweets.
I will probably not win you over. I somehow can’t visualize people swarming the pet stores yearning to adopt a mouse, but I will use this post to adore Nature in all its magnificence -both big and small, domesticated and wild.
With a nod to Mother Nature and with love to all the thousands of pets out there –whichever kind they might be- I’m tweeting you a wonderful weekend!
