The Knock on the Door

At 3 pm sharp there was a knock on the door.

I sure have been waiting for it.

A minute later a UPS delivery person handed me a large bubble-wrapped envelope.

A little nervous, I opened the envelope, and there it was.

The first copy of my book.

No, hang on. Let me rephrase that. The first copy of my first book, which I’ve just seen for the first time in real life and not on a screen, the summary of two years of hard work and endless editing and re-editing, and a childhood dream ever since I remember myself.

Yeah, that’s more like it.

So it’s ok I have butterflies in my stomach as I’m looking at the cover page of my book for the first time, I’m telling myself.

In a few seconds I will open the book and experience the bizarre sensation of being both the reader and the writer of my own creation, but for now, I will just savor this wondrous moment of passage from the realm of wishful thinking into a solid reality.

A dream come alive with a knock on the door.
