Fruit-Flavored Water in 3 Minutes

Posted by Didi Gorman on

See this awesome fruit-flavored water?

Let me explain why this exquisite summer drink is starring in a post in mid-December.

It all started at our school’s WINTER sports day.

The kids had been playing in the winter wonderland (a.k.a our snowy school yard) the whole morning, tossing snow balls, building snowmen, jumping off snow piles, making snow angels, sliding, sledding, building snow forts, and even skating on ice.

And all that running around made them hot, sweaty, and mostly thirsty!

When they came inside for a little break, we served them homemade fruit-flavored water, like the one you see in the picture. Wow, what a hit! We served well over 10 pitchers in less than 5 minutes, and the kids kept on coming back for more. There was much gulping and slurping in our cafeteria that day…

It was refreshing, hydrating, fun, fruity, but not sweet, and they simply loved it!

No one even looked at the hot chocolate. Come to think of it, who wants a hot drink anyway, after sweating in their winter gear the whole morning?

I was so impressed, I decided to replicate it on my own mob at home, which took about 3 minutes to prep. Needless to say it was a success, or I wouldn’t have dedicated a whole post to it.

We’re going DIY here, so we won’t be buying any bottled flavored water from the store. It’s really very simple: all you need to do is cut up some fresh fruit into a water jug. That’s it, job done. We don’t even need a recipe, it’s that easy.

There’s no sweetening here of any kind. It’s only fruit and water. Although the water will not be sweet, you will notice that after a few minutes it has absorbed a hint of flavor from the fruit (especially if you use fruit which imparts flavor once cut up, such as strawberries and oranges).

And don’t forget to pour some of the fruit into the drinking cups, right? Then watch the fun of fishing the fruit out of the cups. You can expect some tongues stuck out, little fingers in the cups, and a few loud sipping sounds!

Looking for even more freshness?
A squeeze of lemon or lime, a few slices of cut up cuke (that’s right), and a few mint leaves, will all be great additions.

If you have some picky eaters, you can simply place the cut up fruit on a platter. Each person can then add the fruit of their choice directly into their glass of water. I tried it the other day, and we ended up just eating the fruit as fruit salad… not a bad idea either!

This wonderful beverage is for all seasons, all ages, and all get-togethers, and could easily replace sodas and juice boxes as a healthy alternative.

Our post today is part of a project about using real whole ingredients (such as fresh fruit) to make simple healthy food from-scratch, as an alternative to store-bought processed sugary products.

Stay tuned. There’ll be more on this topic in the coming posts.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend filled with delightful sips,

Didi
